Tuscan Window (2)
Tuscan Window (1)
These paintings were done after one of our trips to Italy. We went to
the small villages of Murlo and Montelcino. While walking the streets
of these intriguing villages, I came upon windows that were of interest
to me. My attention was drawn to the indentation of the window in Murlo
and the antique curtains which hung in the window in Montelcino. Both
windows were framed by an old exterior wall which reminded me of how
old buildings can loose the freshness of their new construction. The
mortar which was missing exposed the rocks which gave strength to the
exterior and the cracks in the mortar were getting ready to expose more
stone. Aging, no matter what the subject is, takes a toll. All animate
and inanimate subjects will eventually reach this fate.
I applied a new technique to the above watercolor paintings which
eliminates the use of glass to protect the painting. The painting is
first fixed with a uv varnish, mounted to a cradle board and finally
waxed.
