Tuscan Window

Tuscan Window

This painting was done after one of our trips to Italy.  We went to a small village, Murlo, just west of Siena.  While walking the streets of this intriguing village, I came upon a window that was of interest to me.  The indentation of the window framed by an old exterior wall reminded me of how old buildings can loose the freshness of their new construction.  The mortar which was missing exposed the rocks which gave strength to the exterior and the cracks in the mortar which were getting ready to expose more stone caused me to pause.  Aging, no matter what the subject is, takes it's toll.  All animate and inanimate subjects will eventually reach this fate.

Living in South Carolina, we do not experience winters as seen in this painting.  You might ask why I painted this scene.  Well, experiencing cold weather in the south and being at the end of January, my mind brought be back to a time living in Connecticut and how beautiful the first fallen snow was.  I can still remember the peace it brought as I looked out of the window and watched the delicate flakes hit the ground.  This thought inspired me to paint this scene.

I live in the South now but my memories of the winters in New England still make me long for the falling snow especially during the holidays. My memories created the painting you see above. It was done with the pour technique which is done by masking areas, painting and masking again. The final result is clearly defined areas. This is a technique which I will eventually be putting on a video presentation.

It was a cool day in the Fall when my husband and I decided to take a ride to Hunting Island.  Because of the cool temperature, we did not expect to seen anyone on the beach.  As we walked with sweaters to ward off the cool air, we saw someone sitting under an umbrella as if it was the middle of summer.  The optics were confusing.  I asked myself if this person was here enjoying the cooler weather, trying to deal with pressing issues, or just wanting to be alone.  We did not stop to ask, but continued walking and left this lone person being there for their own personal reasons.
